Sign Effectz, Inc. Project Wins ISA Award
A recent Sign Effectz, Inc. project for the Discovery World Museum in Milwaukee, WI received an award in an annual design competition. The competition, International Sign Association’s (ISA) 2012 Sign Contest, recognizes design excellence in a number of categories including Exhibit and Tradeshow Graphics. The contest has a 30-year history and receives entries from all over the world.
When Discovery World set out to create an eye-catching internal graphic for the Caterpillar mining exhibit, they turned to Sign Effectz, Inc. to come up with the large-scale design that would draw the attention of museum visitors. Several design concepts were considered before settling on a simple, larger-than-life 3-D sign consisting of just one word: “BIG”.
This “Big” sign invites visitors into the exhibit and serves as a container. These six foot tall letters bring a high level of visibility and house approximately 300 pounds of charcoal nuggets. Wire cloth face material and welded studs retain the nuggets of charcoal which give the sign a real mining “feel”. It is externally illuminated with directional lighting, has all-welded aluminum construction and is finished with acrylic polyurethane.
According to Paul Krajniak, Executive Director, Discovery World Museum, “The ‘BIG’ sign at Discovery World’s mining exhibit is unique and unorthodox. Its ability to deliver the message for the corporate sponsor, Caterpillar, has been spot on; helping to make the exhibit very inviting to museum visitors. The sign was also very well-crafted. I am very impressed with Sign Effectz’s ability to turn a unique sign design idea into a real thing.”
