Sign Effectz’s Role on Milwaukee’s Historic King Drive

Every once in a while, we get the opportunity to work on a project that’s about telling the story of a neighborhood.

The City of Milwaukee recently recognized the King Drive Streetscape & BRUSH Mural Initiative with a 2026 Mayor’s Design Award, honoring projects that make our city more beautiful, functional and welcoming through thoughtful design. The award celebrates the collaboration between planners, designers, artists, contractors and community partners who helped transform one of Milwaukee’s most historic corridors.

At Sign Effectz, we were proud to play a role in bringing that vision to life.

Fabricating Environmental Graphics

Working alongside the project team, we fabricated and installed a variety of environmental graphics and wayfinding elements throughout the corridor. From neighborhood identification signs and interpretive displays to directional signage, every piece was designed to complement the character of Bronzeville while helping residents and visitors better experience the district.

Completed environmental graphics installed along Milwaukee's Historic King Drive as part of the award-winning streetscape initiative. One of the things I enjoy most about projects like this is seeing how many disciplines come together. Great environmental graphics begin with a vision. Architects, landscape architects, designers, artists, municipalities, fabricators and installers all contribute something unique. When everyone does their part well, the result becomes something people interact with every day without necessarily thinking about why it feels so welcoming.

I was especially happy to see our Account Manager, Josh Brown, represent Sign Effectz at the Mayor’s Design Awards ceremony. Josh worked closely with the project team from concept through completion, and it was fitting for him to be there celebrating what everyone accomplished together.

Strengthening a Neighborhood’s Identity

Projects like the King Drive Streetscape remind us that signage can do much more than identify a place. It can tell stories, strengthen a neighborhood’s identity, improve the visitor experience and become a lasting part of the community.

We’re grateful to have been part of this award-winning effort and congratulate everyone whose vision and hard work made it possible.
