When Discovery World set out to create an eye-catching internal graphic for the Caterpillar mining exhibit, we worked with them to come up with a large-scale design that would draw the attention of museum visitors. Several design concepts were considered for this corporate exhibit before settling on a simple, larger-than-life 3-D sign consisting of just one word: “BIG”.
This “Big” sign invites visitors into the exhibit and serves as a container. These six-foot-tall letters bring a high level of visibility and house approximately 300 pounds of charcoal nuggets. Wire cloth face material and welded studs retain the nuggets of charcoal which give this corporate exhibit a real mining “feel”. It is externally illuminated with directional lighting, has all-welded aluminum construction and is finished with acrylic polyurethane.
We received an Honorable Mention award for this exhibit sign in ISA’s annual design competition.
The ‘BIG’ sign at Discovery World’s mining exhibit is unique and unorthodox.
